Put your music on shuffle, first line of twenty songs, the first line of the twenty-first song is the title.
One Star Shining
There you stand in your dungarees I remember when, remember when I lost my mind Wish I didn't have this nervous laugh it's very clear our love is here to stay
It's been a mystery all my people, all my people, grab a partner, take it through It's not easy bein' green I don't want to hear you (kick me out, kick me out)
I'm tired of your open mouth She was smitten from the first by a curious fellow I just don't know where to begin Boy you know you make me float
Sometimes I wonder why I go on loving you this way I really can't stay There's a cat in the alleyway Please don't do what I say
Trying hard, I thought I'd done my best Bet you wonder how I knew I have looked all over the place All that time I was searching, nowhere to run to, it started me thinking
An exercise in futility This morning Norm and I enacted our annual election day ritual of driving to the polls together to cancel out each other's vote. I'm actually glad I listened to him and didn't vote early, though. For the past two weeks he's had a view of the lines around the block for the downtown Decatur early voting site. As he pointed out, it took us about an hour to vote in 2004. Since more people already voted early in Georgia than voted in the entire 2004 election, we decided to gamble on shorter lines today. I was SHOCKED though, to have no line whatsoever! We had our pick of voting machines, but Norm decided to take the one next to mine anyway so he could be certain to vote differently from me. The only item we agreed on? We both voted "No" to require mandatory uniforms for Dekalb County students in grades K-5.
Surprise! On our way to this morning's halfway ultrasound, Norm announced that he had changed his mind and he thought that we should find out the baby's gender after all. Still, he declared it to be a formality, because based on my own rules of pregnancy prognostication he was already sure ( we are having... )
Tomato MANIA! To say that there's a lot going on at Chez Basset is the understatement of the year, but for the moment I will concern myself with the perishables. We had dinner with Norm's parents last night, and I returned home with an armload of home-grown tomatoes. You may not know this, but I am a tomato fiend. I absolutely adore home-grown tomatoes and I relish this time of year. The first summer we were together, Norm watched in amazement as I finished off dozens of tomatoes by myself. My mother-in-law in fact plants three extra plants just for me each year. Due to my insatiable tomato appetite, Norm actually planted a tomato garden just for me this year. I was delighted when they started coming in. Our vines were covered in hard green tomatoes, so it looked to be a promising summer... And then Auggie discovered that tomatoes are like BALLS growing on TREES and he ate every last danged one of 'em (after playing with them first). But ANYWAY! My MIL has eased the pain with her tomato bounty. For some reason, the Roma tomatoes were the ones that thrived this year, rather than her usual better boys and big boys. Since I know that my tomato jones will be replenished this weekend, I have set aside 20 tomatoes to last me the next three days (not kidding) and I am willing to share the rest. I have approximately 50 ripe Romas up for grabs. Any of you Decatur-ites interested? The catch is that they need to be picked up today (I'll be home almost all day and evening) or Thursday or Friday during the workday (I have plans both nights). Let me know!
It's Official! As of today, Norm's company is incorporated and fully funded by a sole investor! Next week he will draw his first paycheck in 21 months. Hallelujah!
Anyone up for a scavenger hunt on Sunday? My friend Leslie is organizing this, and I think it sounds like fun. Sunday's hunt will have a CSI theme and take place in Grant Park. Let me know if you want to join our team!
Feed the World Got some time to kill? Want to feel virtuous for doing so? Then head on over to free rice. It's a charitable effort disguised as a word game. For every vocabulary word you correctly define, 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program (http://www.wfp.org/english/). This is for real, and it's addictive!
Flashback A long, long time ago, we discussed 80s songs that sucked. As it so happens, I stumbled across this article today. Even though it's old news, I'm looking at supergoober, and I have one word for her. Vindicated!
Oak Grove Market I have no intention of turning my LJ into a food journal, but some things are too good to keep to myself.
On a tip from a friend, gt_norm and I went to lunch last Thursday at Oak Grove Market on La Vista. Back when it used to be called Northeast Meats and it was owned by the current owners' parents, it was my favorite butcher shop in Atlanta. They've chi-chi'd it up quite a bit, adding a cafeteria area. They have daily specials along with a regular menu. Here's the important part: Thursday is Steak Day. For $7.99 plus tax (no tip jars!) we could choose a strip steak, a ribeye steak, or a bacon-wrapped filet mignon (and it was at least 8oz!), a baked potato or fries, and a salad. The salad wasn't wimpy, either. It had two kinds of lettuce, tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, and olives. They grill the steaks on a Big Green Egg and they are like whoa good! The only possible downside is that the steaks are not cooked to order. Norm and I both got the filet and it was cooked to a very tender medium, which suited us just fine! The place was packed, so we ended up joining some ladies on the couches.
Go early! When the daily special is gone, it's gone!
Three years married, nine together. I love me some gt_norm. Believe it or not, this is the first wedding anniversary we've both awoken AND gone to sleep in the same state. Sweet.
Lunch Club OK. Next week got booked out of nowhere, so I'd like to shoot for the week of the 24th. Earlier in the week is better for me since it's the end of the quarter. Does anyone have a preference for Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday? How about a restaurant choice? apersonalchef suggested Indian (which sounds good to me)!
Let's do lunch! As I mentioned previously, I am now working from home. Although I enjoy spending more time with Norm, Hudson, and Auggie (in that order), it sure would be nice to mix it up a bit. It seems to me that quite a few of my fellow LJ'ists are Decatur-ites who may also be interested in actual adult, real-life conversation. What say you? Anyone up for lunch one day next week? I'll even wear a Whyvette name tag if you want me to!

Here is how it works. Copy this list. Leave in the bands you've seen perform live. Delete the ones you haven't and add new ones that you have seen until you reach 25. An asterisk means the previous person had it on their list. Two asterisks means the last two people who did this before you had that band on their list, etc.

Comment and I'll give you a letter. In your journal, list ten of your favourite songs that begin with that letter.
Thanks to kymmz, today’s post is brought to you by the letter “W”:
1. Wasted Days and Wasted Nights by Freddy Fender – A childhood favorite. My dad used to play this one for us.
2. We Got the Beat by the Go-Go’s – Simply because it is the very first record I ever bought with my very own money.
3. When Doves Cry by Prince – Favorite W song from the 80s. This was a tough, tough decision. There is a surprising number of awesome W songs from the 80s.
4. What’s On Your Mind by the Information Society – The W song that reminds me most of college.
5. Welcome to Paradise by Green Day – Favorite W song of the 90s (though Wave of Mutilation by the Pixies was a close, close second).
6. World Spins Madly On by the Weepies – The W song I find myself listening to most often these days.
7. Wicked Game by Chris Isaak – This is the W song that reminds me most of Norm. Runner up: Waitress in the Sky by the Replacements.
8. Watusi Rodeo by Guadalcanal Diary – Favorite W song by a local artist.
9. Wild World by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Favorite novelty W song. It narrowly edged out What Would Brian Boitano Do from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.
10. We Walk the Same Line by Everything but the Girl – I love this ode to friendship.
Bonus: This is hands-down my favorite W video evah.

Forgive me while I wallow in the shallow end of the pool for a while. The drama whipping around me is too much to deal with right now.
The good news?
1) I am now working from home. It is a solid paycheck, and I am very grateful for it. Especially since next month marks a year since Norm has had one. 2) My passport has arrived a whole two days before I leave for Cancun. 3) I have not killed an iPod all year. Go me!
